This program is inspired by the Haystack series by Claude Monet. This series is often noted for Monet’s varied depictions of sunlight as it hit the haystacks in the early morning. The pieces in this program are meant to represent Monet’s representation of light in the different ways in which each composer treats the concept of tonality. Where some pieces treat tonality using language of the 19th century, others reflect their culture through their use of harmony. Some pieces in this program also step outside of traditional definitions of tonality or abandon it altogether.

Artist’s Note: Due to the different tonal languages used in this program, it may be less palatable for conservative audiences than the Postcard program.
